Woodburn, OR – SWING FORE! THE KIDS – a scramble golf tournament to raise funds to support The First Tee youth golf program in Woodburn, will be held on Thursday, October 15 at the OGA Golf Course. With an 8:30 start time, the $125 per person entry includes $50 directly toward supporting youth golf in our area, plus 18 holes of golf, range balls, prizes, and lunch.   In partnership with the OGA Golf Course, a Programming Affiliate of The First Tee of The Children’s Course, the Woodburn Area Youth Golf Association (WAYGA) funds professional golf instructors to teach The First Tee’s Nine Core Values of honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, respect, confidence, responsibility, perseverance, courtesy, and judgment.

Over 60 youth participated in the program in 2009, involving several hundred hours of professional and volunteer time.  WAYGA Board President Don Judson said “many parents expressed appreciation for the program’s impact on their child’s self confidence, self control, overcoming learning or size challenges, building strong values, growth as individuals, and finding a passion for the game and creating the desire to play golf in high school.”

WAYGA is also soliciting 2010 Member and Sponsorship support to build next year’s program.  The Bronze Level starts at $100, and includes one free round of golf at the OGA course (a $60 value), a $25 gift certificate to Piper’s Jewelry, one free rose from Valley Pacific Floral, a Pizza Special from Coyote Pizza, and results in the sponsorship of two youth participants for one year.  The Silver at $250, Gold at $500, and Platinum at $1,000 adds more benefits plus heightened sponsorship of additional participants.  For those golfers not belonging to any formal golf club they can purchase their 2010 OGA membership through “Club WAYGA” for an additional $50.

In The First Tee Program, children ages 7-17 progress through different levels called Par, Birdie, Eagle, and Ace.  At the end of a 6-week session, The First Tee Coach evaluates the progress of each participant to determine if they have demonstrated a thorough understanding of the golf and life skills lessons prior to advancing to the next level.  The OGA Golf Course and WAYGA are committed to offering junior golfers a platform where they will have increased opportunities for success in all aspects of their lives.
